Learn how and why minimally invasive cardiac surgery is the best choice.

The development of minimally invasive methods has revolutionised the surgical treatment of aortic valve disease. Elderly or weak patients should expect a speedy and painless recovery and can return to their family and homes two to three days after surgery.

The heart will battle against the resistance produced by a closed and stiff valve if it does not open properly, limiting the heart’s capacity to empty out when it contracts. Aortic Valve Stenosis is the medical term for this condition.

On the other hand, the same valve could be “leaky” and fail to seal properly when the heart is reloading between contractions. Because a large amount of the oxygenated blood that is pumped forward into the main pipeline leaks back into the heart, the heart’s pumping motion is inefficient. Aortic Valve Insufficiency or Regurgitation is the medical term for this problem.

Unfortunately, most cardiac surgeons do not have the time, desire, or opportunity to learn these new minimally invasive techniques and continue to use the old-fashioned breast bone splitting technique (median sternotomy). They also use blood transfusions in the majority of their surgical patients. Lengthy wound healing, more wound infections, more postoperative discomfort and bleeding, a slow recovery from surgery, and a poor cosmetic result with a 12″ to 14″ midline scar from the base of the neck to the bottom of the breast bone are all downsides of this method.

If you require an aortic valve replacement, the following are the reasons WHY you should consider minimally invasive cardiac surgeryas well as a description of HOW we can do open heart surgery with a small incision on the right side of the chest wall (minithoracotomy):

There is no chopping of bones at all. The incision creates a small gap between two ribs and heals quickly. Infections are almost unheard of in this type of wound.

There is no discomfort. This incision is made painless by injecting small quantities of local anaesthetic between the ribs. After undergoing minimally invasive cardiac surgery, our patients wake up pain-free.

There was very little bleeding. This method avoids the bleeding that bone cutting and wider incisions produce in traditional surgery. After minimally invasive cardiac surgery, only a small percentage of patients require blood transfusions.

Recovery time is short. Even elderly and weak patients are up and about in less than 24 hours and can usually return home two days after surgery.

The cosmetic results are excellent. Only a 2″ thin scar on the right side of your chest must be visible. You’d still be able to wear an open shirt, a blouse, or an evening gown, and that tiny scar would be hidden. It is an extremely safe, precise, and exact approach to replace a heart valve.

Here’s a lovely piece of advice from us. In the event that you require open heart surgery, inquire about these least invasive alternatives. Make it clear that a minithoracotomy is what you want. If these options are not available, it is worthwhile to seek a second opinion from a Minimally Invasive cardiac Surgery Center with significant expertise in this technique. After all, it’s your body, your heart, and your life on the line.
